Assisted Hatching

Used in In Vitro Fertilization (IVF), Assisted Hatching is a scientific technique which improves the implantation of embryos into a woman’s uterine lining by making an opening space by which embryonic cells can hatch out. Pregnancy cannot occur until and unless the embryo hatches. Assisted hatching is recommended for infertile couples if the:

  • Woman is 38 years or older and has a high (FSH) follicle stimulating hormone level

  • Couple have failed to achieve pregnancy in a prior IVF cycle

  • Couple is using FET (Frozen Thawed Embryo Transfer)

  • Embryo is transferred at day 3

  • Embryos are fertilized using (ICSI) Intracytoplasmic Sperm Injection

On the Assisted Hatching day, the outer shell is thinned so that hatching can take place after transferring to the uterus. Assisted Hatching increases the possibility of monozygotic twins or identical twins. It can be done using acid or a laser.
